2 tsp

5 g of another ingredient

5 grams is a teaspoon-sized amount: about 1 teaspoon of water or baking powder, 1¼ teaspoons of sugar and 2 teaspoons of flour, so a cup measure is far too big and spoons do the job.

One US cup, spooned and levelled; weights from USDA FoodData Central where it has one, reviewed August 15, 2026. How we calculate

5 g by ingredient

Why 5 g isn’t one cup amount

Grams measure weight and cups measure volume, so the answer depends on the ingredient. Flour is light and holds air, so 5 g of it fills more cups than 5 g of sugar, whose crystals pack tightly. Only water and water-like liquids are 5 ml for 5 g.

No scale? Spoon the ingredient into the cup and level it with a knife. Scooping straight from the bag packs in up to 30% more flour.
